Bernard Price, retired University lecturer and zoologist was brought up on a farm in rural Ireland, later making his way to England and joining the Nature of Upper Lighthorne Facebook group, which is where our paths crossed initially. With a desire to learn more about local bat and bird life, I connected with Bernie, as he mentioned about removing bats from the attics of old houses around the area.
We were keen to sit down and talk with Bernie, upon discovering more about his zoology background and his many adventures into the unknown. Despite having the intention of talking bats - we couldn't miss out on hearing about Bernie Madagascan shenanigans and was excited to share his experiences.
One that we discussed with Bernie, features his Millennium Fellowship expedition to Madagascar, where he was tasked to capture, examine and track the Fossa.
The Fossa are feline-looking carnivores which are an apex predator on the Malagasy island. Eating primarily lemurs and small mammals, Fossa's captivated the hearts and minds of the Madagascan people and those studying them, like Bernie, being sleek and elusive in nature.
Watch the full interview with Bernie Price about his expedition to Madagascar, flying into Antananarivo to track, capture and release these wild beauties back into the Madagascan wilderness.
